Rats are a common pest problen in and around homes of Florida. The two common types of Rats are the Norway Rat and Roof Rat. The Norway Rat is the larger of the two and generally lives in under ground burrows dug in the soil. In Residendial areas they feed on snails and pet food. Roof Rats are longer and sleeker than the Norway and perfer to nest in above ground levels in foliage and structures, Perhaps as away of distancing itself from the Norway Rat, the more dominat of the two. Roof Rats feed on fruit,nuts,snails and seeds. Some Trivia: Norway Rats are sold in pets stores around the country as pets. Rats have very poor eye sight. Rats are neophobic = A FEAR OF NEW THINGS Rats develop what is called Kinesthesis = meaning muscle memory to navigate familiar surroundings. Rats can produce up to 25,000 fecal pellets per year. Rats are capable of spreading diseases such as Salmonella. Rats can squeeze thru opening as small as one 1/2 inch. Rodent control is very important part of pest control, rodents are responsible for home fires,water leaks, damage to a/c ducts and not to mention there ability to spread disease.
