Bed bugs survive so well because they’re excellent at staying out of sight and preying on human victims at vulnerable times, like during sleep, when their presence won’t be obvious.
Bed bugs are attracted by carbon dioxide, which is exhaled by people and other animals. They stick close to these CO2 sources, but will crawl anywhere from five to 20 feet for a meal. And they can crawl almost anywhere because of their small, flat bodies: floors, walls, ceilings.
Bed bugs have been found in homes, apartments, hotels, motels, dormitories, shelters, cruise ships and other modes of transportation. Spaces where there is a high turnover of occupants are most at-risk for a bed bug infestation. Other places bed bugs have been reported include nursing homes, hospitals, primary and secondary schools, laundries and dry cleaners, movie theaters, and moving vans.
Because of their small size, bed bugs can hide virtually anywhere in a home or other dwelling.
